Strategic Breakdown

Court Zones Explained

Zone 1

Non-Volley Zone

The Kitchen

7 ft from net, each side

The most contested area on the court. You may not volley — hit the ball before it bounces — while any part of your body or paddle touches the kitchen or its lines.

Winning the kitchen means winning the rally. Control this zone and you control the point.

Key Rules

No volleys while touching the zone

Kitchen line is part of the kitchen

Momentum fault applies after a volley

Zone 2

Service Box

Service Court

Behind the kitchen line

The area behind the kitchen where serves must land. Each serve must travel diagonally cross-court and clear the kitchen without touching its line.

A deep serve to the backhand corner forces a weaker return and keeps your opponent on the baseline.

Key Rules

Serve must land in the diagonal box

Cannot land on the kitchen line

Bounces here satisfy the two-bounce rule

Zone 3

Transition Zone

No Man's Land

Mid-court

The vulnerable mid-court area between the kitchen and the baseline. Balls aimed at your feet here are difficult to handle — you're too close to attack and too far to defend well.

Move through this zone quickly. Every well-placed shot should be followed by a step toward the kitchen line.

Key Rules

High-risk if you linger

Balls will drop at your feet

Dinks and drops exploit this zone

Zone 4

Baseline

Back Court

22 ft from net

The back edge of the court where you begin every rally. The serving player must keep at least one foot behind the baseline during the serve.

Use the baseline to reset hard-driven balls and regain control — then advance toward the kitchen.

Key Rules

Serve starts from behind here

Both feet must be behind at serve

Strong groundstrokes come from here
